Plot

Michael Karthikeyan (Vijay Sethupathi) is a pizza delivery boy who lives with his girlfriend Anu (Remya Nambeesan). She is an aspiring novelist and is researching for writing a horror story, whereas Michael does not believe in supernatural powers, and is afraid of anything supernatural. Anu, keeps telling him that he would soon realize the presence of supernatural beings. At first, Michael is confused and scared, and his fears are confirmed when he comes to know his boss, i.e., the Pizza restaurant owner Shanmugam's (Naren) daughter is possessed by a spirit. Meanwhile, Anu becomes pregnant, and after a brief altercation, Michael and Anu get covertly married. One particular day, Michael goes out to deliver a pizza to a customer and returns to the restaurant in a state of shock while covered in blood; he is apparently injured, keeps constantly muttering Anu's name, and seems to be worried about her. When his boss questions him, Michael explains that he had been to deliver a pizza to a customer named Smitha (Pooja) in a bungalow and recounts the events that happened at the bungalow.

Smitha requests Michael to wait downstairs while she goes upstairs to retrieve change. Almost immediately, there is power failure, which alarms Michael. While waiting downstairs completely alone in the dark, Micheal hears a loud unidentifiable noise from the bedroom upstairs. Going up to investigate, he finds Smitha murdered suspiciously and notices one slice the pizza he had delivered to be missing, suggesting that there may be somebody else in the house. Horrified, Micheal makes a dash for the door only to realize that it has been locked from the outside. Further more when the murdered woman’s husband Bobby (Simhaa) arrives, he at first believes he stumbles upon his wife having an affair. Through his cellphone Micheal communicates with Bobby and explains his situation thoroughly instigating Bobby to aid him on how to get out of the house. Moreover Bobby suddenly disappears from the front entrance, and is found by Micheal inside the house mysteriously murdered in the same room as his wife, with two slices of the pizza now missing. Also, Michael encounters the couple's child "Nithya", identical to the name of the spirit allegedly possessing Shanmugam's daughter.

Micheal tries everything he can to get out of the house including trying to break down the sealed doors leading outside, to using the house phone which happens to work even though the line is dead. Micheal manages to contact Anu using the phone and gets her to contact to the local police to come and rescue him. When a couple of policemen arrive at the bungalow, Michael believes that Anu had requested them to help him, but they reveal that four people had been killed in that house - Smitha, Bobby, their young daughter and a girl named Anu, implying that she is Micheal's girl friend, Anu. The police disclose that Michael is a suspect regarding the murder case and attempt to arrest him. Confused and in tears, Micheal does not believe the policemen and attempts to escape the clutches of these police men in order to go in search of Anu.

While trying to escape, Micheal witnesses the police getting dragged into the house and being killed. At this juncture, Michael, in a horrified state, runs back to the restaurant. While Michael is not convinced that Anu is dead, his friends at the restaurant and Shanmugam start realizing that they had never seen Anu; they also observe that Michael's home does not have any evidence that he lived with Anu. Further, it is revealed that the haunted bungalow had witnessed the untimely deaths of a married couple, their daughter, and two policeman, whose ghosts Michael had earlier interacted with. Meanwhile, Michael seems to continue his search for Anu, has constant health issues, and seems to be disturbed by ghosts and supernatural entities.

As Michael during a delivery stops and calls Anu, the true story of what had happened is disclosed. The Income Tax department had planned on a raid at the restaurant owner Shanmugam's house. Shanmugam who has diamonds worth around 20 million hidden in his restaurant hides it in a box of candies and asks Michael to deliver it to his house. But Michael is involved in a bike accident and come in contact with the hidden diamonds. Michael and Anu decide that this stealing those diamonds would improve their life style and support their baby. So, they concoct a clever story in which Michael convincingly "forgets" the Pizza bag at the "haunted" bungalow which Shanmugam would never enter into, thanks to his fear of supernatural powers. Meanwhile, Anu has moved to Bangalore with the diamonds and her belongings, and has obtained fake documentation using which Michael and Anu can settle abroad.

Michael, after the phone call, goes to deliver a pizza to a house and he encounters a series of events similar to the story he had narrated. Inside, he meets a little girl identical to the "Nithya" he had described in his story. Michael is locked inside the home with "Nithya" curiously looking at him.

A reviewer from Behindwoods.com stated, Karthik Subburaj played "all the cards required to make a quality horror suspense film with a thrilling screenplay, deft camerawork, strong performances, eerie sound effects and music"Indiaglitz.com wrote: "If the success of a thriller lies in bringing the film-goer to the edge of the seat, Pizza does it. With right toppings in the form of a taut screenplay, deft camera work, eerie sound effects and nice background score, the movie manages to leave a mark". Vivek Ramz of in.com rated it 3.5/5 and cited that Pizza was a "well made suspense thriller that keeps you guessing for most parts".Top10Cinema.com wrote that the story had been told "very interestingly" and that "horror movie buffs will certainly enjoy this Pizza".

The former claimed that the second half of Pizza has a "reasonably enjoyable tanginess, but to get to that you have to sit through the protraction of the first" and that "the screenplay [...] doesn’t render much help",  while the latter concluded that the film displayed "signs of a craftily executed thriller, but falls short of satisfaction due to erratic narration", giving it 2.5 out of 5 stars.
The film also got some good appreciation from many leading actors including Rajinikanth.Sequel

A sequel called Pizza 2: The Villa was produced and released the following year by the same production house. The sequel did not carry on with the characters from Pizza, but told another eerie tale, with Ashok Selvan and Sanchita Shetty playing the lead roles.

Prem Kumar and described as a humorous tale about a young man who forgets a few days of his life even as he is about to get married. Prem Kumar lost his memory, when he was working as an assistant cameraman in the film Vaaranam Aayiram; two days before his marriage he went to play cricket with three friends and while attempting a catch, he fell, losing his memory temporarily. Balaji Tharaneetharan, who was present with him, began writing a script based on the incident, besides directing it as well. One of the other witnesses, Bagavathi Perumal agreed to play himself in the film, while the victim Prem Kumar handled the cinematography himself. It took two months for lead actor Vijay Sethupathi to memorise the film's popular dialogue "Enna Achu?"
The film created a record of sorts by featuring a song, the lines of which were selected from phrases sent in by more than 1,800 people through Facebook. To promote the film, the crew created an online game that could be played on the film's website.Soundtrack

Plot

Friends Kesavan (Ashok Selvan), Sekar (RJ Ramesh Thilak) and Pagalavan (Bobby Simha) meet Das (Vijay Sethupathi), a middle-aged man with an imaginary girlfriend named Shalu (Sanchita Shetty) who does low-profile kidnappings for a living. Broke, the trio decide to become his assistants. One day, they kidnap a young boy and successfully obtain ransom money from his father Nambikkai Kannan. Nambikkai's contractor brother has been arrested for attempted bribery by State Minister Gnanodayam (M. S. Bhaskar), a disciplined politician who plays by the book. Impressed with Das' kidnapping skills, Nambikkai asks him to kidnap the minister's son Arumai Pragasam (Karuna Karan) as revenge and offers to pay Das up to INR20 million (US$330,000).

The next day, the four men set out to kidnap Arumai but are astonished to see him get kidnapped by another group. They kidnap Arumai from the other kidnappers and discover that the first kidnapping was staged by Arumai himself to extort money from his father. Arumai manages to convince Das and his men to collude with him to obtain ransom money from his father. The group demands INR20 million (US$330,000) from the minister and receives the money

An argument over splitting the cash arises between Arumai and the rest during which their van loses control and falls from a bridge. Arumai runs away with all the money. The minister seeks the assistance of Encounter Specialist Bramma, a brutal and merciless cop to hunt down the kidnappers. Arumai returns to his house and hides the money in his room. Das devices a plan to kidnap Arumai again to retrieve the money. They accidentally meet Arumai and successfully kidnap him again. But Das lets Arumai go free, after making him promise that he should not tell anything about them to the police. Arumai also promises to return their share of the money. Bramma finds that Arumai staged his own kidnapping and uses this information to threaten Arumai into testifying against the Das gang.

Arumai tells the court that the Das gang did not kidnap him and they are acquitted. A furious Bramma takes the gang to a remote location and brutally beats them and plans to kill them. But they are saved by a rusty gun that misfires into Bramma's buttocks, allowing them to escape. Arumai's father breaks in and takes the money bag to the Chief Minister, who provided the ransom money. When he opens the bag, the minister is shocked to find it filled with newspapers instead of cash. Arumai had transferred the cash to another bag and gives the Das gang their share.

The Chief Minister calls Arumai to his office and asks him to stand as a candidate in the upcoming elections in lieu of his father, who never brought much income to the party due to his refusal to be corrupt. The Chief Minister praises Arumai's shrewdness and believes he can rake in substantial income for the party. Arumai wins the election and appoints Sekar and Kesavan as his Personal Advisers. Pagalavan becomes an actor. Das continues his kidnapping business with new band of young men. They kidnap a woman who looks exactly like Shalu, but later only he knows that she is a Ministers Daughter, which means he has broken the 1st law of Kidnapping.

Critical reception

Soodhu Kavvum opened to highly positive reviews. Baradwaj Rangan from The Hindu stated "Nalan Kumarasamy’s Soodhu Kavvum is a demonstration of what’s possible when movies are made for the sheer joy of making movies. There isn’t a single calculated moment, something cynically aimed to satisfy this segment of the audience or that one. Everything is organic, the events rooted in a nutty story and sprouting through a brilliant screenplay". S. Saraswathi from Rediff gave 3.5 stars out of 5 and wrote "Soodhu Kavvum is an engaging film, with ingenious characters and entertaining situations" and called it a "must-watch". N Venkateswaran from The Times of India wrote "Nalan Kumarasamy establishes himself as a director to watch out for in this laugh riot of a debut movie. Carrying off a dark comedy is no mean task, but Nalan hits the target right in his first attempt. His writing is crisp, the lines are down to earth and funny, the characters well-etched and the screenplay has no dull moments". Sify wrote "Soodhu Kavvum works big time due to smart writing and perfect characterisation. Final verdict on Soodhu Kavvum is that it is a gutsy great film. It is one of the best films to have emerged out of Kollywood in a long, long time". Cinemalead wrote "Soodhu Kavvum is definitely a new attempt in Tamil cinema, go for it."Malini Mannath from The New Indian Express wrote "Engaging screenplay, deft narration, well-etched characters and twists and humour generated at unexpected moments, make Soodhu Kavvum a wacky jolly fun ride". Behindwoods gave 3 stars out of 5 and said "Soodhu Kavvum’s scoring area is definitely its characterizations as Nalan Kumarasamy offers each of the central characters a back story that’s unique and more importantly contributing to the character’s present circumstance". Haricharan Pudipeddi gave 3 stars out of 5 and stated "Soodhu Kavvum an entertaining watch". Vivek Ramz from in.com rated the film 3.5 out of 5 and wrote "Soodhu Kavvum is a total laugh riot!
Sudhish Kamath later picked Soodhu Kavvum as one of five films that have redefined Tamil cinema in 2013, writing, "This film is a joy to watch, full of laughs and unpredictable situations with great wit, dark humour and satire. Writer-director Nalan Kumarasamy, the winner of the first season of Nalaya Iyakkunar, is one of the most exciting filmmakers of our times with his ability to turn a cliché on the head". The film also featured in IANS's list of 10 best southern films of 2013, who called it "unarguably the funniest film of the year". Critical Reception

The film received highly positive reviews from critics with highly praising vijay sethupathi's performance.

The Times of India gave 5 out of 5 stars and wrote Idharkuthaane Aasaipattai Balakumara lacks the sophistication of a Soodhu Kavvum or Pizza but makes up for it in sheer likeability. His debut Rowthiram was an uneven effort but in Idhaaba, Gokul is more surefooted, deftly weaving plotlines and confidently untying the knots in his script".  IANS gave 3.5 out of 5 and wrote Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara (IAB) doesn't merely entertain, but also addresses a domestic issue with a very strong dose of humour. It's undoubtedly one of the smartest yet funniest Tamil films in recent times.  Behindwoods gave 3.25 stars and stated "Idharkuthaane Aasaipattai Balakumara is not an adhesive that keeps you glued on the seat, but is a spring that might make you bounce with laughter"  The critics from Sify.com mentioned "Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara (IAB) is a good fun ride. It is a comedy film laced with black humour and works due to its smart writing."  Rediff gave 3 out of 5 stars, wrote "Director Gokul in his film, Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara has created some weird, quirky and offbeat characters in hilarious situations who keep the audience entertained, writes" and called it a "laugh riot".  Oneindia gave 3 out of 5 stars and wrote "Director Gokul has done a good job in making the film a worth entertainer. His screenplay, though has jerks at parts, is good and the introductory scene gets a special mention" and called the film "a one time watchable movie".
In contrast, Baradwaj Rangan from The Hindu wrote "Gokul’s Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara isn’t a lazy movie. It is, in fact, the opposite. There’s too much of everything — too much plot, too much mood, with three narrative strands infused with three unique sensibilities. He concluded that the film provided "Some mild laughs" and "Lots of tedium".
